Both Parenting and Expansion Management magazines have ranked the Monongalia County School System as one of the top public school systems in the nation. The Mon County Board of Education governs the district, which educates more than 11,000 students in 11 public elementary schools, five middle schools and three high schools. Several schools within the district continue to be among the best performing and highest-ranked schools throughout the state and country. The board of education estimates that more than $10,000 is spent on each student per academic year and that the school system’s pupil teacher ratio is 14:1. Morgantown is home to West Virginia University, the state’s largest land grant university and research center. WVU is one of the top 100 research universities in the country with an enrollment of more than 30,000 undergraduate and graduate students. The university awards more than 5,000 degrees each year. The presence of the university in the community also ensures there is never a shortage of BIG 12 sporting events, cultural activities, and other extracurricular opportunities in Morgantown and beyond.
Morgantown also offers opportunities for training in a variety of specialties and technical programs through Monongalia County Technical Education Center, West Virginia Junior College Morgantown Campus, Pierpont Community and Technical College, Ross Medical Education Center and the Morgantown Beauty College, just to name a few.
